Motor Ship Finnmarken

The land docked MS Finnmarken (1956) is a monument on Norwegian Coastal history, docked in the town centre of Stokmarknes, Vesterålen. Stokmarknes is the birth place of the Hurtigruta coastal express operations, wich has been operated since July 1893.

The Hurtigruten operations has connected Norway, both inland and coast, north and south, and is still a vital, very important way of communication.

You are welcome aboard MS Finnmarken, to see and feel former life along the coast.

You will meet with history of sailors and pioneers, passengers and people along the coast of Norway, from Bergen to Kirkenes.

Visit the bridge, old cabins, exhibitions, the café (which is serving drinks and meals) and the rest of the ship as well.

Take part in guided tours and learn why the Hurtigruta holds such a strong position with the Norwegian people. Even a part of DS Finmarken (1912) is available to our visitors.

Departure: Normally we have 1-2 departures every day, please check the departure times on the booking section, since they vary on daily basis, and please be at our reception no later than 1 hour before departure.

Duration: Typically 3-4 hours, although this may vary depending on weather conditions or other unforeseen circumstances.

Capacity: max 80 passengers.

We head towards the underwater canyon of Bleik, in search of the highlight of the whale watching tour - the sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus). On the way offshore, we regularly encounter different whale species inhabiting these waters, for example:

• Pilot whale (Globicephala melas)
• Minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata)
• Orca or killer whale (Orcinus orca)
• Humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae)
• Atlantic white-sided dolphin (Lagenorhynchus acutus)
• Harbour porpoise (Phocoean phocoena)

Each safari is different, which makes the experience even more exciting! When we set out from the harbour, we never know exactly what kind of whales wait for us on that particular day.

Return to Andenes:

On the way back, we will serve you a hot meal: our delicious fish soup or vegetarian soup with bread. The soups contain local supplies and self-collected herbs. You can enjoy the boat ride and magnificent landscapes while summing up the experiences of the safari with our friendly crew.

Of course the trip is not over yet, so there might be possibility to encounter more species or some Arctic birds. Very often the Northern Fulmars circle close around our boat, and you might spot puffins in the flight, as they are heading to nearby island called Bleik Island, where thousands of them come nest every summer from mid April to mid August. When heading back to the harbour, there might be harbour seals close to the shore or resting on the rocks. Some of the bird species you can expect to see are:

• White-tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla)
• Atlantic Puffin (Fratercula arctica)
• Cormorant and European shag (Phalacrocorax carbo and Phalacrocorax sinensis)
• Kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla)
• Common guillemot (Uria aalge)
• Razorbill (Alca torda)

Our safari success rate is around 98%, but occasionally, it happens that we fail to spot any whales (we are dealing with nature and wildlife, after all). For such rare days, we have a whale guarantee: If we do not see whales, guests who are interested can join on another safari free of charge. In this case, please contact reception after the trip and we will rebook you.

• We have seating indoors, but it's always good idea to bring warm clothes, footwear, hat and gloves! It is cold out at sea!
• Waterproof clothes in case of rainy days

Arctic Whale Tours terms and conditions

- Check in begins one hour before departure

- We reserve the right to cancel the tour at any point before departure due to weather and/or other unforeseen circumstances. In case we cancel the trip prior to departure, full refund will be given to customer.

- Any cancellation by Arctic Whale Tours will be notified by text message and/or email. Please check your phone and email the evening prior to your trip.

- Minimum number of passengers: 20 (We reserve the right to cancel a departure if there are less than 20 persons on the tour)

- Length of safari: on average 3-4 hours although this can vary depending on weather conditions, and/or location of whales, and/or other unforeseen circumstances. Arctic Whale Tours AS hold no liability for any inconvenience and/or disruption to travel plans in case the length of the trip is shorter or longer than described due to unforeseen circumstances outside our control.

- Cancellation by customer: Free cancellation up to 24 hours prior to departure. 100% cancellation fee for any cancellations less than 24 hours to departure.

Svinøya Rorbuer

Considerable emphasis has been placed on maintaining the authenticity of the rorbu cabins. The timber and time-honoured craftmanship have been preserved to convey the feeling of what a rorbu cabin was like in the old days, when the fishermen harvested the seas of Lofoten with the help of oar and sail. The rorbu cabins are idyllically located between the fish landing station, quayside buildings, fish racks, and other traditional, local buildings. There is the sea on one side, and the spectacular Lofoten mountains on the other.
The fisheries are still of primary importance to the region, and the Lofoten Cod Fishery has always formed the basis of existence for the people here. Having the opportunity to observe these activities at close quarters in Svinøya is an experience in its own right.

There is Børsen Spiseri Restaurant, for those who enjoy good food. The Gunnar Berg (1863-1893) Gallery. Old-fashioned general store from 1828, still intact. Deep-sea rafting, safaris on swift giant rubber dinghies. Tailor-made Lofoten adventures. What is the Summer Arctic Route Travel Pass? The Arctic Route Travel pass is a virtual card that allows you to use the Arctic Route summer buses and connected ferries within a specific period: 4, 7, or 10 days.

With the multi-day travel pass, you can save money as you can use the Arctic Route as many times as you want along all possible routes, navigating you around Northern Norway during the Arctic summer.

The Travel Pass is valid on the Tromsø – Lofoten and Narvik – Lofoten routes. The following ferries are within your travel pass for pedestrian access: Brensholmen – Botnhamn / Grylllefjord – Andenes / Melbu – Fiskebol. Be creative!

What is included in the Travel Pass? The purchase of the travel pass gives you a unique and personal code, valid for a specific period on our two Arctic Route summer routes and connected ferries. This code will deduct any future purchase price to zero. Pay once, and travel a lot!

How to buy the Travel Pass? The Arctic Route Travel pass is only available online at Best Arctic/Arctic Route. Choose your first day of traveling in the calendar during your purchase. Easy and quick.

NOTICE: the end date in the calendar (start date + 1 day) during your purchase, is not indicating the end date of your travel pass – this is purely a technical set-up during the buying process and can be ignored.

Where can I find the Travel Passcode? Within 24 hours after your purchase, you will receive your personal and unique code via your email address.

Valid duration of the Travel Pass? The Travel Pass is activated from 00:01 on the activation date until 23:59 on the expiration date.

When to reserve your spot on the bus? Reserve a spot on the bus, whenever you have made your holiday plan and schedule. Even just before departure. Though remember to reserve your spot online before hopping on the bus by ‘buying’ the actual route you will travel via our booking widget, so we keep a great seat for you on our bus.

How to use the travel passcode? During the purchase of the chosen route(s), fill in the unique and personal travel pass code, which will deduct the full price of the chosen route to NOK 0. Find the full instructions on your ticket ‘View ticket’.

Can we validate? When hopping on the bus, keep your travel pass purchase document and your route purchase confirmation document, and your ID-card ready for the driver to validate.

Buying travel passes for more than 1 guest? That is possible. During your purchase, fill in the names of all your co-travelers. When reserving the actual tickets, use the same names during the purchase of the route ticket. Easy as that!

How to activate your travel pass? During your purchase, fill in the date of your first travel journey with Arctic Route. This will be the start date of your travel period. Though, you can change that date, before the activation, by contacting Best Arctic. Keep your full flexibility.

Traveling with big luggage? Each passenger may bring one item of easy-to-manage hand luggage, which must fit under the seat or in the overhead rack, as well as an item no larger than height + length + width = 200 cm/23 kg.  We want to support you in getting your sports gear with you, such as a surfboard, or bicycle, … so you can maximize your holiday.
